I was recently asked to be part of a show by curator/artist, Rich Jacobs. The show, “There is Xerox on the Insides of Your Eyelids; Skate Zine Art from the ’80s and Beyond,” opened last weekend at the Needles and Pens gallery in San Francisco. I was very happy to be a part of it and flattered Jacobs asked me, as I would be in the company of folks who’d had positive influences in my early creative life. You can find a few shots of the work and opening here and here. There’s also a write-up and links on the Rodger Bridges Strange/Beautiful blog.

And check out a really good interview with Rich Jacobs (in a photo by Bernie McGinn above) at Fecal Face. The man is maybe one of the kindest, most positive people you’ll ever meet. And he’s motivated. He’s talking about traveling the zine show after its engagement in San Francisco. I have a feeling it will be expanding as well.

A book? Come on, Rich, let’s do it.

I’m hoping for an actual reunion of all these couch-touring Xerox machine kooks. That would be fantastic.

I’ve been working on a post for this show since Rich Jacobs contacted me through Garry Davis to be a part of it. That post has become an epic tome documenting my experiences in the early 80’s skate zine phenomena that despite my best efforts, shows no sign of being finished any time soon and has evolved into something else altogether.

So — I’m keeping it on the back burner, simmering until done.

In the meantime, There is Xerox on the Insides of Your Eyelids opened last Saturday (2/9) at the Needles and Pens gallery in San Francisco. Billed as, “an art exhibition exploring the realm of 1980’s skate zines & xerox art from a small space in time (about 20 years ago), + what they do now.” and featuring “the zines & art of the original makers and xerox tweakers / stamp lickers / mail artists…”, the show was curated by artist/curator and zine maker, Rich Jacobs (Skate-Edge + Move). Though I remember Skate-Edge with uncertain clarity, I recently became (re)aquatinted with Rich via his posts on GSD’s myspace page and their semi-recentish zine collab, Be Quiet (Maybe You Should Try It).

Focused primarily on zines that merged skateboarding with art and blurred the lines between, the show documents a condensed sampling of a decade’s worth of xerox art spanning the early 80’s and 90’s.

Back in the late ’80s when skating was comatose, there was an actual underground. Curb tricks were the shit. Everyone played in a band. There were no skateparks. No X-Games. No noses to pop off. No curb wax. Zines were made and distributed through the actual post office. For reals. Check out the show, “There is Xerox on the Insides of Your Eyelids” if you’re in San Francisco this month (Needles and Pens Gallery). And watch for it to grow and travel over the year.

The opening for There is Xerox on the Insides of Your Eyelids, a skate zine/art show at Needles and Pens was last night. I was honored to be asked by show curator Rich Jacobs to participate. I gave Rich a box of zines and a box of photographs, and he put together a nice little cross section of photo and zine work of the era:

The show also had work by Gary ‘Skate’ Davis, Tod Swank, Dan Estabrook, Andy Jenkins, Thomas Campbell, Chris Johanson, Kevin Wilkins, John Dettman-Lytle, Mark Waters, Rich Jacobs, Jocko Weyland, Dennis Remsing, Tim Kerr, Chris Shary, Ron Cameron, Mofo, Rodger Bridges. The show drew a great crowd of old-timers, new-timers, and lots of folks in-between. I was a surprised at the size of the turn out, but then again, I had no idea what to expect.

It’s a little weird seeing your stuff from close to twenty years ago showcased in a an art show, especially since it’s been about that long since I’ve created zines and ‘art’ photography, but certainly flattering - and exciting.

I understand that an even larger traveling version of the show will make its way around the country and perhaps beyond. Very cool.
